07   The Basics of Brickwork Detailing

Sponsored by the Expo Committee.
Presented by Ronald J. Hunsicker, PE – Manager, Architectural Services, Glen-Gery Corporation.
Water is clever. It finds its way to the insides of buildings through openings that we usually cannot see. It is so clever that finding a wet spot does not mean that we have found the point of entry. Joints not filled with mortar and missing flashings are the main causes of water penetration and are also problems that are very difficult to remedy.

The sun is clever, too. As it strikes a building, it changes the building’s size and shape and then tries to pry bits and pieces of materials from the frame. The position of the sun and other changes in a building’s environment, cause movements that must be recognized and accommodated.

“The Basics of Brickwork Detailing” is a short course about water, movement, masonry veneers, and the IBC. It emphasizes brick veneers and explores:

• How do walls keep water out?
• Why doesn’t four inches of masonry keep all of the water out all of the time?
• How do drainage walls work?
• What mortar should be used?
• What joint profile should be used?
• Should head joints be filled with mortar?
• Where should flashings be installed?
• Are ties really a waste of time?
• Is movement controlled or accommodated?
• What causes movement and how are different materials affected?
• Is a control joint the same as an expansion joint or is it a movement joint?
• Where should movement joints be placed?
• What questions must a designer ask?
• Can the presence of a movement joint be disguised?
• How frequently should movement joints be detailed?
• Is the kind of sealant important?
• What do I do with parapets?
• What about shelf angles?
